Development of City Owned Property

Background

The development of city owned properties raise different issues: (click here for a map which shows City property in blue)
• There is no vision of what traits this area should exhibit in the future.
• There is no mechanism for developing this vision.
• The City is looking at each parcel of property by itself, rather than viewing development of the area as a whole.

HDC Position

The City of Tacoma should form an Urban Design group, tasked with identifying an overall vision for development of the Hillside, East of UWT. This group might be patterned after what has worked for the Foss Waterway. City owned properties need to be placed back on the tax rolls. Mixed use will most likely be the most appropriate mode of development but the HDC is opposed to turning City owned properties into low income housing.
